The Real Lady Biker…

What’s your perception of a female biker? If is a scantily clad woman in a bikini draped over a motorbike, then maybe you need to get into the 21st century. But that’s not to say lady bikers aren’t sexy. For me there’s nothing more hot than a woman that can ride her own and even more so one that is well equipped. This is a REAL lady biker!

For me the appeal of a female biker is one that is dressed for the ride, is well prepared and is in tune with her machine. She is smart, sassy and will not be told she shouldn’t be riding because she is a girl! Oh yes and she can still look pretty underneath that helmet with her lippy on and a Cheshire grin on her face (even if she is wearing clothes, lol!).

There is also something rather empowering about being a female biker. Almost like a forbidden fruit as this has mostly been seen as a man’s world. I love that more women are riding bikes. I love the freedom, the sisterhood and the simple fact that we just can! It also brings about a sense of belonging and friendship.

But I’m not a feminist and have an equal amount of male riding friends as I do female. And unlike some fellow lady bikers, I have neve once been made to feel unequal or unwelcome by males in the industry. In fact its been quite the opposite.

However there is still more that needs to be done to accommodate this growing trend of female bikers. We’re not quite there yet… But us ladies are getting noticed and are ready to rev our engines; Bring on the brain child of Hayley Bell and her Women Riders World Relay happening across the globe next year. Or Jessica Haggett and her worldwide established groups of ladies bikers The Litas. Not to mention the pockets of smaller groups such as Female Riders UK.

But I can honestly say that I would never have got on so well with a bunch of females if it wasn’t for biking. With such a diverse range of women from teachers and security guards to nurses and managers. All with that one thing we love to do in common, uniting us with an everlasting bond of friendship. This is why I love being a female biker…

Watch out for my documentary on The Litas ladies of Plymouth coming soon. Feel free to share your thoughts on this subject in the comments below.
